Your humble admin, yours truly, your friendly neighborhood Skinnymojo, was just sittin' here, trying to solve the conundrum of "What the hell is it I'm really trying to do here?" Well, let's take a step back, and see what brought us to where we are in the first place (which is rarely this site, obviously).
- That cesspool of hate and bile, Sodahead, gave me the boot, so I decided to use the webspace I bought for school projects to create a "getaway" for folks who were tired of dealing with crazy people on a daily basis
- At first, interest seemed high, and I had several people regularly helping me keep this place going
- I'm still learning all this PHP/CSS/whatever coding shit, so the site's been wonky at times
- I'm on a shared server, so there are times where lag is a motherfucker
- One of my main loves in life is making folks laugh, so I decided to shift focus toward generating some funny content for visitors (all ten of them) to read
- There are exactly two people responsible for all funny content, that being myself and IAmAMeatPopsicle. As hard as we'd try, there's just no way for the two of us to come up with interesting/funny shit on any kind of regular basis to get folks to come here/keep folks coming here
- I've searched high and low for "better" social networking programs to use, such as elgg and Dolphin, with mixed results. It just very recently occurred to me that approximately ten (I'm being liberal with that number) people would even notice, which then led me to wonder:
"What exactly am I trying to accomplish here?"
Frankly, I don't yet have a straight answer, but I know this: I stay crazy-busy as it is, being a father, and being in school. This site, and my attempts to maintain it and make it a place people would want to be, has sapped a lot of valuable time, and the returns have been less-then-satisfying. I just don't have the money or time to invest in the sort of project I'd hoped this would turn out to be, so the odds of it growing more popular (or even visible) "all on its own" are pretty damned slim. Word of mouth helps a lot of times, which is why we have what few members we do have.
Ultimately, I have decided that the forum-engine I'm using (SMF) is actually pretty god-damned great, especially when compared to some of the other ones available. The ten or so people who still come here on a semi-regular basis seem to be able to navigate it just fine, and enjoy the features as-is (including myself in that number).
I had a point somewhere, hang on...
Anyway. I don't have the time, money, or support necessary to be an "alternative" to anything, so I will no longer be pursuing that route in any way, shape, or form.
I wanna make cartoons, dammit.
I wanna use my high-falutin' college degree to avoid "light-industrial" work for the remainder of my days.
So that's what I'm gonna do. The forum will remain up, and folks are always free to join, come on in and congregate, post whatever, or even just waste some time in the arcade. I've had a lot of great people come (and go) here, and I'd miss a lot of them if I just straight-bailed. I reckon the only differences any "long-time" members are going to notice will be less activity from me. I just don't have the time to invest. I'm handing administration privileges to Meat, and from today forward, this is essentially his site/forum. I'll still be here, just not as often.
Thanks to all who have helped this be a fun experiment, I really appreciate it. I encourage you to stick around and show Meat some love - he's a helluva guy and a damn good friend.
Later, y'all
